Rudy Kehkla
My sculpture is mainly composed of air. I use bits of wire only to define that part of air to which I want to draw my audience’s attention…minimal visual cues to assist the mind to define space, or enclose volume. Sometimes no more than a simple gesture, my work can consist of a strand or two, or be a highly detailed study consisting of many pieces of wire.
I find the shadows cast by each of these 3D sketches fascinating. I use 2 or 3 halogen spotlights to simultaneously cast a variety of perspectives as I work. The shadows act as a 2D reference plane and help my mind make the leap from sketching a picture on a flat surface with a line of ink, to sketching a hologram in space with a line of steel or bronze. I expect an end result that works perfectly from any viewpoint, 360 degrees.
Each sculpture is individually hand-made; a one of a kind piece. Sculptures can be made for indoors or outdoors. They are made of steel or bronze wire, and can be painted flat black or left unpainted. The sculptures can be made standing, as a mobile, or wall-mounted. Rudy will work from photos and sketches. The range of possibilities is infinite: musicians, athletes, clowns, acrobats, wildlife, dancers, etc. “If you can sketch it with a line of ink, you can sketch it with a line of wire.” Sizes range from three feet to life-size and can be made to accommodate specific spaces.
