For many years I have worked simultaneously in two distinct fields- ceramics and painting- together they complete my definition of creativity: painting challenges my sense of 2-dimensional space, composition, and meaning while working with clay is mostly a reaction to the material itself, an intuitive and tactile experience. My line of sculptural lamps came into existence because they incorporate both mediums perfectly; I am able to explore form, color, light, and function together in one object.

The lamps are made through a multiple step process: first I sculpt the base from clay then glaze and fire each piece; finally I assemble and wire the lamp. I choose a shade shape to compliment the base form and decorate it with a collage of rice paper, paint, and hand cut block prints. I enjoy these many steps and consider improvisation as an important factor in my work: I respond to the piece as it happens. In my creative process each step informs the next.

I studied at Bennington College where I received a B.A. in painting and ceramics. After graduating I traveled to South America and lived in Ecuador for almost two years; while there I met my future husband. Since my time abroad I have established a studio on Martha’s Vineyard, MA where I am fortunate enough to live all year round.
