CharityStarting up your own company means forging new paths, often testing the waters by jumping in with a whoop rather than merely toe-dipping. For us, it also means setting an example for our children. Making ourselves proud through their eyes. Every quarter, Briar Patch Heirlooms will select a children's charity and provide a portion of all proceeds from this site to that valuable organization in the hopes of making a better world for all of our youth. This quarter's selected charity holds a special place in my heart, as I lost my grandpa to myeloma in the summer of 2002. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education, and patient services. Since its inception in 1949, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has awarded more than $424 million in grants to some of the best and brightest researchers in the world. Their belief is that innovations in blood cancer research hold the keys to curing all cancers. Treatments such as chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation, originally developed for leukemia, are now standard treatments for many cancers. In addition to research support, the Society offers support groups, financial aid, information and advocacy programs for patients and their families. The Society's mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. You can give with confidence to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. 75% of every dollar spent goes to patient services, research and education. Why select this organization as Briar Patch Heirloom's quarterly charity to assist children? Roughly 30 percent of cancers in children ages 0-14 are leukemia. Anyone can get leukemia. Leukemia affects all ages and sexes. The cause of leukemia is not known. The good news is that the relative five-year survival rate has more than tripled in the past 45 years! I credit the Society with this success, and hope that this number continues to rise as our medical advances allow us to conquer these cancers. Briar Patch Heirlooms pledges its support to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and dreams of a world where no more children are afflicted with these devastating cancers of the blood.
